PNG files from screenshots, logos and design tools are often far bigger than they need to be. PixelPilot reduces them to a 256-colour palette, the same idea as TinyPNG and pngquant, which usually cuts the size by half or more with no visible change.
For photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP shrinks them much more; the settings panel offers both.
How to use it
- Add one or more PNG files.
- They are compressed automatically, keeping transparency.
- Compare before and after.
- Download them, or all of them as a ZIP.
Formats and limits
- Opens
- JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), AVIF where your browser decodes it, BMP
- Saves
- JPEG, PNG (lossless or reduced palette), WebP, and AVIF only if your browser can encode it
- PixelPilot uses your browser’s own encoders, which are good but not as tuned as tools like MozJPEG. Results vary by browser.
- Metadata such as EXIF camera data and location is not copied into the output.
- Animated GIF, WebP and PNG become still images.
- Images over 40 MB or 50 megapixels are refused on the free plan to protect your browser’s memory.
Compress PNG questions
Yes, the same palette technique, but it runs in your browser, so there is no upload and no daily file limit.
Smooth gradients need more than 256 colours. Choose Lossless in the settings for those images.
